The State of Ohio set aside $88 million—$1 million per county—for match-free grants through the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program Fund. Round 1 closed on January 31, 2022. Round 2 is only available for projects in Ohio counties that did not pursue their entire $1 million reserved funds for environmental assessments or remediation projects.

If applicants in your county did not pursue reserved funds in Round 1, there is still time to secure match-free dollars. Round 2 funding runs from March 1 - April 30, 2022. Find out more.

Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program Funds

Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program Funds are available for up to $300,000 for assessments and up to $1 million for cleanup—only the remaining reserved amount can be pursued in Round 2. The county-reserved funds do not require a match. If county set-aside funds are not requested in the first two rounds, they move to the statewide competition fund for Round 3, which opens on July 1, 2022.

Lead applicants can be public, private, or non-profit entities, but all projects must have an authorization resolution or cooperation agreement/letter from a county, township, municipality, port authority, or park district. The local unit of government can take a passive role with project implementation if the lead applicant is another entity.

Brownfield remediation projects can address old schools, former warehouses, closed factories, or abandoned or underutilized commercial properties, among others. An Assessment Grant can fund a Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessment to help you understand current environmental conditions on the property to make plans for cleanup or redevelopment. A Remediation Grant can fund acquisition, asbestos abatement, environmental cleanup, building demolition (under certain conditions), and infrastructure improvements.
