Verdantas provided environmental remediation site restoration services for a former petroleum-impacted property in Washington County, Rhode Island, as part of a Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) initiative to address long-standing contaminated sites across the state. The project was one of six remediation sites awarded to Verdantas under the program and focused on a property affected by historic underground storage tank releases that had remained unresolved for decades.
Although several remediation efforts had been completed previously, petroleum impacts remained in site soils and groundwater. The property had been under regulatory oversight since the late 1990s, and the contamination persisted despite multiple targeted excavation activities. Funding provided through RIDEM created an opportunity to implement a comprehensive corrective action approach capable of addressing the remaining impacts and advancing the site toward closure.
Working in partnership with Brighter Horizons Environmental, Verdantas designed and oversaw a remediation strategy that combined large-scale excavation with groundwater management and enhanced remedial treatment technologies. Approximately 14,000 tons of petroleum-impacted soil were excavated and transported off site for disposal. Because groundwater was encountered at shallow depths throughout the project area, continuous dewatering operations were required to maintain safe working conditions and facilitate excavation. Extracted groundwater was treated onsite through carbon treatment systems and discharged in accordance with RIDEM permitting requirements.
To address residual contamination remaining after excavation, Verdantas applied approximately 4,500 pounds of Klozur® CR, an advanced remedial product designed to promote degradation of petroleum impacts within soils and groundwater. Following remediation activities, the site was restored, and new monitoring wells were installed to evaluate long-term performance and verify continued environmental recovery.
The project demonstrates Verdantas' ability to develop practical and effective solutions for complex contaminated sites, helping transform a decades-old environmental liability into a site progressing toward regulatory closure and long-term environmental stewardship.
