Verdantas supported the Phase VIII-A1 expansion at the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill in Orange County, California, delivering geotechnical engineering, design support, and construction quality assurance (CQA) for a 20-acre composite liner cell. A key challenge was stabilizing a large, active landslide within and adjacent to the expansion footprint to enable safe development.
To address this, Verdantas developed and implemented stabilization measures that included large-scale earthwork, horizontal dewatering systems, and construction of a deep buttress to control slope movement. Instrumentation installed across the site provided continuous data on ground behavior, allowing the team to monitor movement and adapt construction approaches in real time to maintain stability.
Supporting this effort, Verdantas performed detailed subsurface investigations, including deep drilling, geophysical logging, groundwater monitoring, geotechnical instrumentation. and geologic mapping, to characterize site conditions and guide design of the composite liner system and earthwork. These analyses informed recommendations for construction sequencing and long-term stability in a geologically complex environment.
CQA services extended across the buildout, including monitoring of liner system components, geosynthetics, earthwork, drainage features, and supporting infrastructure such as operations pads, roadways, and utilities. This oversight helped ensure construction met design requirements while integrating new development with ongoing landfill operations.
Through a combination of geotechnical analysis, targeted remediation design, and continuous construction oversight, Verdantas helped transform a challenging site into a stable, buildable expansion—supporting the long-term operation of a critical solid waste facility.
