Verdantas has served as Environmental Trustee for a former specialty chemical manufacturing facility in Gulfport, Mississippi, since 2016. Appointed through the Reichhold Chemical bankruptcy Environmental Response Trust, Verdantas was tasked with overseeing remediation, regulatory compliance, long-term stewardship, and redevelopment preparation for the site while working within limited trust funding. The team inherited responsibility for multiple environmental liabilities, including groundwater contamination, closed waste management areas, and engineered remedy systems, all while maintaining alignment with EPA Region IV and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
To maximize available funding and advance site closure objectives, Verdantas implemented a strategic remediation and asset management approach. Using advanced groundwater plume modeling, the team demonstrated that several aging remediation systems had reached the end of their effective life cycle and could be safely decommissioned. Additional efforts focused on targeted source-area remediation, optimization of long-term monitoring and maintenance programs, and the reduction of unnecessary operating costs. Verdantas also helped reduce the RCRA permit boundary, enabling the sale of a portion of the property and generating revenue to support continued environmental response activities.
These efforts transformed a constrained corrective action site into a redevelopment-ready asset. In 2026, the remaining property was transferred to Harrison County, where future redevelopment opportunities are being evaluated. Throughout the project, Verdantas delivered work safely, maintained regulatory compliance, and helped position the site for long-term economic and community benefit while remaining within available program funding.
