The tricolored blackbird, a species found primarily in California, has experienced significant population declines due to the loss of historic wetland nesting habitat. As many birds have shifted to nesting in agricultural fields, breeding colonies have become increasingly vulnerable to routine harvest activities, creating challenges for both species conservation and agricultural operations.

Since 2017, Verdantas (formerly Colibri) has partnered with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and other conservation organizations to support efforts to protect tricolored blackbird colonies throughout California's San Joaquin Valley. Verdantas biologists locate, document, and monitor nesting colonies, particularly those established in grain fields near dairies where nests may be at risk during the breeding season. By providing timely survey data and ongoing monitoring, the team helps conservation partners work directly with landowners to delay harvest activities until young birds have fledged or nesting activity has ended.

Through this collaborative approach, Verdantas helps balance agricultural productivity with species conservation, contributing to improved nesting success and supporting the long-term recovery of one of California's most vulnerable bird populations.
